Aphasia Awareness in June

The more people who know what aphasia is, the easier the lives will be for those who live with it.

june Aphasia awareness

Aphasia awareness month is a great way to spend some time focusing on spreading the word ‘aphasia‘ around as much as possible.

In the UK:

About 350,000 people in the UK have aphasia – help our affiliate charity Say Aphasia educate 350,000 other people about aphasia. So that people who live with aphasia do not feel so alone, isolated and misunderstood.

Also use #Aphasia, #LivingwithAphasia to share our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter posts.

In Devon:

Around 6,000 people in Devon have aphasia. Share awareness of how we support people and reduce their isolation through art.

Inspirational times during the Covid 19 times

We have been keeping our friendships going through zoom, telephone and post during this Covid 19 crisis. Our Creative Art group has been offering our support for the marvellous NHS and Carers too. Follow Magic Carpet art ideas too.

Keeping active is important so follow with Em’s exercises video too.

We hope you are all staying well and safe during this time.

Stand By Me

In these strange and isolating times here is a wonderful film showcasing Living with Aphasia with our fabulous choir singing “Stand by Me”.

The film was made by Jon, who has had a stroke with aphasia, together with his marvellous band, The Red Rock Blues. Our singing group, led by Sam from La La Choirs, has provided the backing tracks and the film includes lovely pictures from our drop in group and creative art sessions. Well done Jon and the team!

We hope that you enjoy watching it!

Stay safe and well!

Hot off the Printer!

Nigel, from our group, has produced this fantastic graphic design for our t -towels. Nigel is a photographer and taught graphic design prior to his stroke. He says the design popped into his head during one of our Creative Art sessions by Magic Carpet.

#FollowtheJacket

Our amazing “Life Jacket” is on the move to spread the word about aphasia! It’s mission is to display the hidden difficulties of the communication condition on the outside.

say without words
First shown at our “Say without Words” exhibition on Exeter High Street

The “Life Jacket” was designed and made by our Creative Art Group (run by Magic Carpet). It’s travelled to the Stroke Conference in Cornwall and it now stands proudly in the foyer of Budleigh Health and Wellbeing Hub.

We aim to keep the jacket on the move around Devon for 2020 so watch this space and #followthejacket!

Christmas!

We are looking forward to our Christmas Lunch on the 10th December when our Singing group will perform Christmas songs for us. It is such a joy to hear people with aphasia sing out loud and we have a lot of fun and friendship. Our choir has grown in numbers and expertise and we have two soloists this year performing for us.
